Daniel shares some apple cider with Maxine to ring in the new year. He apologizes for his lousy mood. Maxine asks him why he cancelled his date. Daniel says his date was not ready and maybe he is not ready to date either. He later calls Melanie and apologizes to her. He promises to talk with her later.
Later at the hospital, Nicole finds Daniel. She pleads her case. She is not over Eric. She also fears that she will never be good enough for Daniel. She sees Serena as the kind of good woman Daniel should be with as he was with Jennifer. Daniel says that is a lot to take in. He assures Nicole that it was never about her being good enough. He decides who he cares about and wants to be a part of his life. Maxine interrupts and calls Daniel to the ER. Before he leaves, he wishes Nicole a happy new year. Nicole tearfully nods.
